Why Do I Push People Away When I Need Them Most?
Understanding why vulnerability can make us withdraw from the people we need.
Sometimes we create distance not because we want to be alone, but because closeness suddenly feels too vulnerable.
Have you ever noticed that when you are hurt, overwhelmed or emotionally exposed, your first instinct is to withdraw, become distant or handle everything on your own?

Why Do I Push People Away When I Need Them Most?
Sometimes the moments when we most need closeness are also the moments when closeness feels hardest to tolerate.
We may withdraw when we are hurt, stop replying when we feel overwhelmed, become distant after an argument, hide what we need, or convince ourselves that we are better off handling everything alone.
For some people, needing another person can bring up vulnerability, fear of rejection, disappointment or loss of control. Past experiences may have taught us that asking for comfort does not always lead to comfort — and that becoming distant can sometimes feel safer than risking being hurt.
The difficulty is that the strategies we use to protect ourselves can also create exactly the distance we fear.
A Question Worth Asking
“Am I creating distance because I no longer want connection — or because connection suddenly feels too risky?”
Pulling away does not necessarily mean that we do not care.
Sometimes it is a protective response that appears when emotions become intense, when we fear being misunderstood, or when depending on someone begins to feel uncomfortable.
Understanding this pattern is not about judging ourselves for withdrawing.
It is about becoming more aware of what happens inside us just before we create distance — and learning whether there may be other ways to protect ourselves without disconnecting from the people who matter.
Awareness can create a small but important space between the impulse to withdraw and the decision about what we actually need.

What to Expect
This is a live psychoeducational and experiential workshop, combining psychological knowledge with guided reflection and practical exercises.
We will explore how withdrawal can function as a form of emotional protection, what may happen internally when closeness begins to feel threatening, and how earlier experiences can influence the ways we respond to vulnerability, conflict and emotional need.
Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own patterns and identify healthier ways of communicating the need for space, reassurance, support or connection.
There is no expectation to share personal experiences with the group. You may participate in the way that feels most comfortable for you.
The workshop is designed for personal growth and self-reflection and does not replace individual psychotherapy or mental health treatment.
