OUR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
Positive Psychotherapy
At Just Between Us, our work is grounded in Positive Psychotherapy, an internationally recognised, evidence-based therapeutic approach developed by Professor Nossrat Peseschkian. Rooted primarily in psychodynamic theory while embracing an integrative perspective, Positive Psychotherapy combines scientific knowledge with a deep respect for every individual's unique story, strengths and potential.
Rather than asking only "What is wrong?", we also ask "What is this symptom trying to tell us?"
From the perspective of Positive Psychotherapy, symptoms are not viewed simply as problems to eliminate. They are meaningful messages that often reflect unresolved inner conflicts, unmet needs or an imbalance in the way we are living. Instead of fighting against symptoms, we work together to understand their purpose, discover what they are communicating and transform them into opportunities for growth, healing and lasting change.
One of the central concepts of Positive Psychotherapy is the Balance Model, which explores how we invest our time, energy and emotional resources across four essential areas of life:
Body & Health
Our physical wellbeing, rest, nutrition, movement and self-care.
Achievement & Work
Our education, career, responsibilities, goals and productivity.
Relationships & Connection
Family, friendships, love, intimacy and our sense of belonging.
Meaning, Future & Spirituality
Our values, purpose, imagination, hope, beliefs and the deeper questions that give direction and meaning to our lives.
When one or more of these areas becomes neglected or overdeveloped, emotional distress and psychological symptoms often emerge. Therapy helps us restore balance, flexibility and a healthier way of living.
Positive Psychotherapy also recognises that the human brain is naturally designed for survival rather than happiness. Throughout evolution, our brain developed a negativity bias, allowing it to detect danger quickly and remember painful experiences more strongly than pleasant ones. While this mechanism once protected us from threats, it can also keep us trapped in anxiety, fear, self-criticism and emotional suffering.
Therapy helps individuals become aware of this natural tendency while gradually strengthening their ability to recognise personal strengths, inner resources and capacities that may have been overlooked or forgotten through difficult life experiences.
Another important principle of Positive Psychotherapy is that psychological difficulties often arise from inner conflicts.
Every human being shares fundamental needs—such as love, security, trust, connection, autonomy, appreciation and meaning. From childhood onwards, we learn through our family, school, culture and life experiences how these needs should be expressed and fulfilled.
Sometimes the coping strategies that once helped us adapt no longer meet the realities of adult life. When our old ways of responding no longer satisfy our present needs, emotional conflict emerges. Rather than judging these patterns, therapy helps us understand where they originated, recognise how they influence our lives today and develop healthier, more flexible ways of responding.
Our work is not limited to reducing symptoms. We aim to help each person discover their own strengths, abilities and untapped potential. We believe that every individual already possesses valuable inner resources. Therapy creates the conditions for these capacities to be recognised, strengthened and integrated into everyday life.
While Positive Psychotherapy remains the foundation of our work, we also believe that every person is unique, and therapy should reflect that uniqueness. For this reason, we integrate evidence-based techniques from a variety of therapeutic approaches whenever they best support the therapeutic process.
Depending on each individual's needs, therapy may incorporate interventions from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodrama, Art Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Approaches, Trauma-Informed Interventions, Grief and Bereavement Therapy, alongside other evidence-based methods that contribute to meaningful and lasting change.
Ultimately, therapy is not only about feeling better. It is about understanding yourself more deeply, restoring balance across the different areas of your life, strengthening your resilience, resolving inner conflicts and creating a life that feels authentic, meaningful and aligned with who you truly are.
You cannot change the story that shaped you.
But you can choose the story that shapes the rest of your life.
