Why Can the Past Be So Difficult to Leave Behind?

Letting go is often described as if it were a simple decision.

But emotionally, it rarely works that way.

A relationship may have ended. A decision may already have been made. An opportunity may have passed. Someone may have disappointed us. Something painful may have happened years ago.

And yet the mind returns.

We replay conversations, imagine different outcomes, wonder what we should have done differently, or remain emotionally connected to something that no longer exists in the present.

Sometimes we are not holding on because we want to suffer.

We are holding on because part of us is still trying to understand, repair, complete or make meaning of what happened.

A Question Worth Asking

“What am I still hoping to receive from something that has already ended?”

Sometimes we wait for an explanation.

An apology.

Recognition.

Justice.

A different ending.

Or simply the feeling that what happened finally makes sense.

The difficulty is that closure does not always arrive from the person, situation or moment that hurt us.

Sometimes moving forward begins when we recognise what we are still waiting for — and explore whether that need can be addressed in another way.

Letting go does not mean saying that what happened was acceptable.

It means allowing the past to become part of your story without continuing to control your present.

What to Expect

This is a live psychoeducational and experiential workshop, combining psychological knowledge with guided reflection and practical exercises.

We will explore why certain experiences remain emotionally active long after they have ended, the role of unresolved needs, regret, attachment and imagined alternative outcomes, and the difference between remembering the past and continuing to live inside it.

Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on what they may still be seeking from a past situation and explore ways of creating greater emotional movement without forcing themselves to simply “get over it.”

There is no expectation to share personal experiences with the group. You may participate in the way that feels most comfortable for you.

The workshop is designed for personal growth and self-reflection and does not replace individual psychotherapy or mental health treatment.
