Why Do We Repeat Relationship Patterns?

The people we meet are different, yet sometimes our relationships seem to bring us back to surprisingly familiar emotional places.

We may repeatedly feel overlooked, become attracted to emotionally unavailable people, take responsibility for keeping a relationship together, fear being abandoned, struggle to trust, or find ourselves giving far more than we receive.

These patterns are rarely random.

The ways we connect with others can be influenced by early relationships, attachment experiences, emotional needs, expectations about love and closeness, personal boundaries and the ways we learned to protect ourselves from disappointment or rejection.

Sometimes, what feels familiar can also feel strangely compelling — even when it does not necessarily serve us well.

A Question Worth Asking

“Am I choosing this person — or am I recognising something familiar?”

Recognising a pattern does not mean blaming ourselves for the relationships we have had.

It means becoming curious about what draws us towards particular dynamics, what keeps us there and what we may be searching for within them.

Awareness cannot change the past, but it can change the choices available to us in the future.
